Thankful Thursday

I am so Thankful for this:

Why you ask, are you thankful for that?? Well, first of all. let me tell you what THAT is. Those are my Stargazer lilies. Here is what they look like for those of you who might not be sure (this pic is from last summer):

These are my very favorite flowers! And here is why I am thankful for those sprouts in the first pic. Last fall, Cody, our Border Collie, got loose and Mr. Lovestodig decided he was going to dig a nice big hole in my flower bed! EEEEKK!!! When I discovered that huge hole, RIGHT where my Stargazers had once been, I was SO unhappy. The stalks had still been there, I hadn't cut them down yet because I was waiting for them to die back. But they were strewn all over my flower bed and dragged into the yard. SO....fast forward to a couple weeks ago. I saw my tiger lilies pop up, but no Stargazers....then, a few days ago, to my very delighted surprise, I saw my Stargazers had started to peek! Oh happy daaaaay! I seriously did a happy dance, you have no idea. I guess when Cody dug up the flower bed he just missed them and must have somehow just knocked off the stalks (that or he totally dug them up and reburried them and they survived somehow). So anyway, I am a happy camper knowing that I will be able to see and smell my lovely Stargazers once again this summer. Yay!

Do you have something to be Thankful for? Let everyone know about it! Just enter your name or name of your blog and add the link to your specific Thankful Thursday post (not your blog's homepage please!) Also, please add the Thankful Thursday logo or link to my blog in your post. Have fun and thanks for joining me!

No More 'Poo

I just found this article tonight about ditching your shampoo. Check it out here. It was quite intriguing to a mom that has been getting more and more "natural" since her son was born 15 months ago. So I did a little looking around and came across this article here. It really made me think. I mean, I knew shampoos have chemicals in them, etc. but I never really thought much about it. Then I got to the part about zinc pyrithione (the stuff in those dandruff shampoos, which hubby and I do use occasionally) and how toxic & deadly a small amount can be and I decided that it is time to get rid of that! Yikes! And then the article mentioned how all these chemicals get washed into the rivers and bodies of water, etc...and I know all that, but now I am paying attention! We have a septic system and a well so that hits close to home! AND we live right next to a creek so I really don't want to be contributing to polluting our water and hurting the wildlife. And not just with shampoo, etc, but that extends to household cleaners, etc.

So anyway, the more I am researching this whole "No Shampoo" thing, the more excited I am becoming about it. Here is another good article I found about it. I think I am going to try it. I am going to post pics too, because I really haven't found too many (there are a couple in the first linked article, on MSNBC). So you all get to follow my "experiment" and I promise I will be totally truthful about it! I read that it can take between 2 weeks to 2 months for your scalp to readjust its oil production, etc. so you will probably get to enjoy some lovely icky hair pics. And, my hair is quite long, so I am going to have to decide if I will cut it in the next day or two, to reduce tangling and just for an altogether fresh start. I shampooed & conditioned my hair today (usually do every other day) so I will take my beginning pic tomorrow. So no more shampoo for Ali!

Oh, one more thing, in my short research, I read that coarse, thicker, wavy/curly hair can have better results with no shampoo (but I did find some people with soft straight hair that said they loved their results). My hair is pretty much like that. I have always had a problem with it being thick, frizzy and a little wavy, but not enough to look good so I straighten it or wear it in a ponytail or clip. I also have itchy scalp problems and I read that will go away too. I even found where people were saying their frizzy/slightly wavy hair ended up having a very nice natural wave to it.
I am very hopeful!

You DO still wash your hair but the way you do it is with baking soda and occasionally apple cider vinegar. Or you can use only conditioner every couple days. I am going to try the baking soda to start with. All you do is dissolve about 1 teaspoon baking soda in enough water to make a paste and then massage it into your scalp. Then you let it sit for a bit and then rinse it out. You can follow with the apple cider vinegar (or lemon or lime juice if that is not satisfactory) rinse for the ends of your hair a couple times a week. I don't think I will do the ACV, at least not to start, mostly because I don't have any at the moment. I will let you know if I decide to use it. Alright, that is it for now, wish me luck!

And..... its Tick Season

Yuck! I HATE ticks! Last night I removed 5 from our barn kitty Oreo and one from Duke (sorry, I forgot to take pics, so this one will have to do ;-) ). And it is only gonna get worse. When I was little I had a tick stuck behind my ear, engorged, so I actually had to go to the doctor to get it removed! I even had a little scar there for a long time. Needless to say, behind my ears is always the first place I check for ticks!

Ok, I have to tell you that I just jumped up and pulled my shirt off because I SWEAR I felt something crawling on my back! EEEESH! But nothing there. I HAVE woken up in the middle of the night with one crawling on me, a couple times actually. So yes, I am a bit paranoid! So thus starts the ticks season here at the Blessed Country Farm, so far the count is 6 ticks.

Do you have any tick stories? Do you even notice them or just go on your merry way? How do those of you with horses deal with them or do you even worry about it?

Thankful Thursday

I am Thankful for winning these cloth diapers and diaper cover from Abby's Lane:

Last week I was the lucky winner of 1 dozen Indian Unbleached Prefolds and 1 Thirsties cover from one of my favorite online shops, Abby's Lane. I gotta say, I love them! Some of you know that I have been using bumGenius 3.0's for the most part and I LOVE them, but I do use some storebought cotton prefolds and Bummis covers occasionally. So when I heard about this giveaway at Abby's Lane, where you got to choose from 5 different prizes: bumGenius 3.0's, bumGenius organic one-sizes, Disana wool covers (would like to try these too!), Swaddlebees Econappis, or the dozen prefolds and a cover, I chose the prefolds and cover since I have a ton of bumGenius diapers and an Econappi already (I actually wanted to try for the wool covers, but I figured more people would be entering that one and I have never tried wool so don't have any lanolin or wool wash or anything yet...).

I knew the Indian prefolds were way better than the "other" ones you can get at Target and Babies R Us, but man do I just LOVE them so much more than I thought I would. They are just so soft and absorbent and the fact that they are cotton is great. I have been wanting to get more natural diapers in my stash so this really helped boost it.

On the natural diaper topic, I have also been adding some bamboo diapers to my mix. I have 3 of the bumGenius bamboo fitteds and one Bamboozle fitted by Bummis. They feel fantastic! They are so soft and luxuriant! Bamboo is a great renewable resource and it is antibacterial which means it helps fight bacterial growth in cloth diapers. Definitely a plus!

Some random diapers from my stash. Yellow is a bumGenius 3.0 (unstuffed), next are 2 Wonderoos, then a blue bumGenius 3.0, and the bottom 2 (camo and a cow print) are Blueberry Minky One Sizes.

Please go check out Abby's Lane, they carry all kinds of cloth diapers & accesories, BabyLegs, Pedipeds baby shoes, baby carriers, Melissa & Doug toys, and so much more! They are wonderful and have fast & free shipping. Plus if you join their Yahoo group, you will get a great weekly newsletter with a 5% off discount code. =)

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful Thursday. Its almost the weekend, yay!

Urgent Prayers for Stellan

Prayers for Stellan

Sweet baby Stellan is due for surgery anytime now, no later than 8:30am Tuesday. Please pray for him and his family and the doctor operating on him.

Here are specific prayer requests straight from MckMama's blog:

Would you pray that Dr. A will have wisdom as to if he should move forward with the ablation after the esophageal study? If he does move forward, would you pray that he will have clarity of mind as far as how aggressive to be with the ablation in order to fix Stellan's problem without putting him at undue risk for complications. Would you pray that the tiny catheters the doctors use will not nick Stellan's coronary artery? Would you pray for peace for me and my husband? Would you pray that heart block will not occur during the surgery? Would you pray that the extra pathways Stellan has will be located and successfully destroyed? Will you pray that, if they need to go through his septum, that it will heal as it should? Would you pray that in the days after the surgery (In infants, coronary damage sometimes doesn't appear for up to three days, so we'll be here for the rest of the week at least it looks.) we will cling to Jesus and not to fear?

We love you Stellan and want you to get better!

Not Me! Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama.

I am NOT still praying for Stellan and the MckFamily.

Jimmy is NOT 15 months old today!

I did NOT just realize that I have passed the 100 post mark! Wahoo! My 100th post was on Easter.

I did NOT find out that I do have hypothyroidism on Friday. Boo! Pill everyday for the rest of my life, yikes! Hope I can remember!

I did NOT sell my son's turtle sandbox at the flea market because it didn't have eyes and we thought we were getting one for free that DID have eyes. We did NOT find out that said sandbox with eyes in fact doesn't have eyes and is not the green turtle sandbox, but a wannabe purple and yellow one! Argh! I was NOT very disappointed and now I have to go about trying to find another one second hand for CHEAP. This time it has to have the eyes though!

I do NOT think the above is a little confusing lol!

I did NOT get a sunburn from being out in the sun all day at the flea market on Saturday. I would NEVER NOT put on suntan lotion and my skin on my shoulders does NOT still hurt when my shirt rubs it.

Well, that's it for this week, join me again next week for things that absolutely DID NOT happen to me!

All ready for church in his new outfit from Grandma & Grandpa C.
(mommy is not ready for church yet, as always lol)

He is Risen

Matthew 28:1-10
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

Easter Egg Tree

Since my Oma (Grandma) is full German, my mom passed on a lot of German holiday traditions. One of them was the Easter Egg Tree. She and Oma each made one every year. So this year I decided I would do it. They always used blooming Forsythia or Pussy Willow branches, but since my Forsythias are just getting started, and I don't have a Pussy Willow yet, I had to use Maple. Soo....

Here is my Easter Tree. I was a little late putting it together, but I am so glad it is finished. I wasn't sure which direction I wanted to go as far as design/style for decorating the eggs, so I did a plethora of styles. Maybe next year I will go all in one direction or even paint/dye the entire egg, we'll see.All I did was cut 3 small branches from a big fallen Maple branch, then I tied a ribbon around them to keep them together. I stuck them in in my rectangular vase with river rocks in the bottom and green moss on top.

For the eggs, I had started collecting them a couple weeks ago. I just poked holes in both ends with a pin and blew them out for Jimmy's scrambled eggs. I then rinsed the shells and let them dry. Then I pulled the ribbon through with a piece of wire - loop at the top and tied a knot on the bottom. Then I painted them. Easy as pie!

I just found out about the Round Robin event over at "Keeping Up With The Schultz Family"
so I thought I would add this post. So head over and check out all the other blogs!

Please say a prayer...

Hello my friends. I just received a prayer request from a friend. Her good friend has been struggling with cancer for a long time and she just told me he is probably in his last days. He will be leaving behind a wife and 2 young children, so PLEASE pray for them, that they will have comfort and peace in this very hard time in their lives. I know a lot of you are great prayer warriors, so please pray for this family. Thank you so much, I will share updates as I receive them.

Thankful Thursday - Grandparents

I am Thankful for my grandparents. My paternal grandparents came over to visit today, and I talked to my Oma (my mom's mom, she is full German) for a long time tonight, so I thought I would post about them.

I am so thankful for my grandparents. They are so wise and I am so glad that they are still around for me to talk to and spend time with. They are a wealth of knowledge and it is wonderful to be able to hear about the "good ole days." I am a very old fashioned girl in many senses, and I definitely have an old fashioned mindset when it comes to many life issues. And to be able to talk to someone who has lived frugally, through "the war" and share the same viewpoints is just awesome to me! I love my grandparents so very much and I hope they will be around for many years to come.

Grammy and Oma have been so wonderful to me since my mom passed away, it really is kind of like having a real mom a lot of the time. Especially with Oma, since she is my mom's mother, I really feel that connection there. My Opa (mom's dad) passed away the Thanksgiving before my mom, so Oma is alone most of the time. I try to take Jimmy over to visit a lot, we will try even harder this spring and summer. Oma has so many wonderful stories about being a young "war bride", moving to the states from Germany, raising 4 babies, gardening, learning to cook and SO much more....I just love her to pieces! I always learn something new from her. We can talk for hours too, tonight we talked for over an hour on the phone, just about flowers and gardening and a German book she is reading (its in German and I only took 2 years of it in Jr High, so I can't read it, poo!), and about my uncles and her cat and Jimmy and all kinds of things, things that I imagine I would talk to my mom about. It was so nice.

And Grammy, she always surprises me with stories of raising my dad, her oldest of 4 and starting their family in their little bitty house and moving throughout the years. I was over at her and Grampa's house a few weeks ago, looking at a photo album of when my dad was little, and there was a pic of a desk she had decorated to look like a fireplace for Christmas so they had somewhere to hang their stockings! I had no idea she was so creative! She also helped my make a bridesmaid dress for my cousin's wedding a few summers ago, it turned out gorgeous! It was the first dress I made actually following a pattern! Before that, I had just used an old "slinky" dress to base my prom dresses, etc. off of.

Grampa, he is so funny! He has always been a big tease. He loves their little Bichon Frise, Breezy, to pieces, it is so cute! She is totally spoiled. When they were here today, he had a Reese Cup and she just sat there looking at him, begging with her eyes and he talked to her and she just knew exactly what he was saying (I think she got a little of the peanut butter lol). They are so adorable how they communicate! She just turns her head and yips, "talking back" sometimes. Anyways....

I could go on and on, but I would be here forever. Thanks for stopping by and as always, if you have something YOU are Thankful for, please link up!
